First off, I want to thank Lorajean, from Lorajean’s Magazine, for letting me use her gnome hat pattern for my Candy Corn hat! When I was thinking about making a Candy Corn hat her pattern came to mind as the perfect one!
You can find the gnome hat pattern here.
You’ll want to have the pattern up for reference while you follow along below.
I hook (5.5mm)
Yarn (white, orange, & yellow)
Follow her pattern with the following adjustments:
Rounds 1-5 are done in white
Rounds 6-14 in orange
Rounds 15-18 in yellow
Also, at round 13, only increase to 44 st, by doing Rd 13 as listed below.
Rd 13: ch 2, *2 hdc in next st, hdc in next 3 st, rep from * 7 times, hdc in remaining sts, join (44 hdc)
After you finish with round 18, tie off and sew in loose ends. You are now ready to add some ear flaps.
For the ear flaps, I did the following:
w/ Y, join to hat approx. 5 stitches from where you tied off.
Row 1: hdc in same st as join, and in next 9 st, turn (10 hdc)
Row 2: ch 2, hdc2tog, hdc in next 6 st, hdc2tog, turn (8 hdc)
Row 3: ch 2, hdc2tog, hdc in next 4 st, hdc2tog, turn (6 hdc)
Row 4: ch 2, hdc2tog, hdc in next 2 st, hdc2tog, turn (4 hdc)
Row 5: ch 2, hdc2tog twice, tie off (2 hdc)
Repeat ear flap instructions for the second ear flap. The space across the forehead should be approx. 14 sts wide.
After you finish the ear flaps…
w/ yellow, join in back of hat, ch 1 and sc evenly around entire hat (including ear flaps), join in ch 1, tie off and weave in ends.
For the tassels I followed Lorajean’s instructions.
